Birmingham Notes.

* I FKOM OUB OW.V COUHESrONDENT.J Our neyv parson, Mr Richards, who arrived here the other day to take up the duties vacated by Mr Birks, was entertained at a social last week by members of the Wesleyan Church. Songs and recitations were given by the young people, and altogether a very pleasant evening was spent. Last Friday evening a lecture on Siberia was delivered in the Town Hall by the Revd. Lytken, a Dane. The rongh state of the weather caused the attendance to be smaller than it otherwise would have been, but those who did brave the elements were rewarded by hearing a most interesting account of the hardships endured by prisoners in Siberia. Our locai builder and contractor, Mr Birch, is at present busy on a shop and dwelling house which he is erecting on his section next to the I own Hall. It is already let to Mr Syms, chemist, late of Woodville, who is starting business here. Judging from the plans shown me the uuilding will not only be a welcome addition but a decided ornament to our township. The recent heavy rains have already worked considerable havoc on the Kimbolton road, between Pemberton and Birmingham. The Government have granted £170, for which tenders have already been let, but this grant will go an infinitesimal small way. Mr Pirani interviewed the Hon. W. P. Reeves on the matter the other day, and it is to be hoped that tliat Minister will urge on the Government the absolute necessity of keeping this main road open for traffic during the winter months. We have been unofficially informed by Mr Stevens that the Government has promised to see tliis done, but we are beginning to lose faith in promises now.
