Rangiwahia Notes

[from ouh own correspondent "! The districts of Rangiwahia and Pembertou present quite a go ahead appearance just now and, undoubtedly, they must thrive, seeing there is such J a large area of magnificent grazing country. Very cold and frosty weather is being experienced now, but notwithstanding this the newly-sown grass seed appears to be growing well. Building is going on apace. At Marshalltown two new dwellings have lately been erected for Messrs Jewing and Benjamin — who have lately arrived from the South Island — while in the Marton Ko. 1 Small Farm Block, Messrs W. Harris and T McKean are building a couple of nice houses. Several other settlers are also about to erect comfortable i homes for themselves. At Wairaki j a new store has just been commenced to the order of Mr Lay, of Pemberton, j who intends keeping it well stocked with everything necessary for a bush i settlement. Already it is a matter of considerable difficulty to traverse tha road into this settlement, the strength of pack horses being severely taxed in ploughing through the boggy tracks. Settlers here are still in a boil as to which site would be most suitable for the erection of a bridge across the llangitikei river. Opinions seem divided between the Three Log Whare and Otara site, but time will settle i this little difficulty. Mr A. Hickford has been appointed local agent for the Alliance A&surance Company. It will doubtless be a convenience to the settlers to have a | resident agent among them, and Mr Hickford seems bent on pushing business.
