Cruelty to Animals.

Edwin Cooper was charged at the Police Court this morning, before Messrs Kirton and Carthew, J.P.s, with having ill-treated a horse on Tuesday last.— Mr Richmond appeared on behalf of the Feilding Branch of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. — A. Wilson deposed to seeing accused going alom» Manchester street flogging a horse on tho day in question ; he was not sure whether accused was using a green hide whip or a supplejack; the horse appeared to give no provocation only that it desired to amble while the rider desired it to walk ; every time accused struck the horse the stick or whip bent under the flank and brought a stream of blood, which was dropping on to the road. -F. Flavall, Inspector for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, deposed to going to Halcombe and taking possession of the horse, which showed signs of ill-treatment. - Messrs J. Nesbitt and A. Richmond gave corroborative evidence of the ill-treatment to the horse. Accused asked to be let off lightly; it was a first offence, and he did not know ho was drawing blood. The Bench considered accused was guilty of gross cruelty, and would fine him X's, or in default fourteen days' imprisonment with bard labor in Wauganui gaol, costs Ml 12s, aud solicitors fee 10s 6d, which coes to the funds of the {■Society.
