Scenery in the Pemberton District.

4#IUW«VHI Very little is known of the fine scenery beyond Birmingham, even by the residents of Feildiug. About forty miles from Feildiug, by way of the Kimbolton road, and ten miles from Ohingaiti, is the Mangawharariki stream, the high banks of which are clothed with native bush, and form some of the prettiest sceuerj- in New Zealand. The Minister of Labor, the Hon. W. P. Reeves, who paid an official visit to the Wairareke State farm, on Friday last, expressed himself as never having seen any gorge of its size with such fine scenery. He made the suggestion that some steps should be taken to preserve it, and said he felt confident that when the road is made "to Ohingaiti numbers of tourists will travel thereby. The gorge which lies betweon the Wairareke State farm and the Marton Small Farm Block, should be protected from destruction by axe and fire as the sides are of no use for grazing purposes, and more profit would be gained by the district from tourists. There is every probability the Government will do their duty in protecting that portion over which they have control, and it is for those settlers having land adjacent to do their share. There are also other localities in the district where the scenery is very good. Up to the present time few business people of Feilding have thought of taking a trip to the sources from which they derive a great portion of their incomes, namely the country districts, but are content to visit some of the larger towns when taking a holiday. If an occasional trip were made to the country it would certainly result in pleasure, if not in profit. A trip up and back can be done very comfortably, from Feilding, within three days, allowing a whole day for viewing the scenery beyond Rangiwahia.
