The Rifle Meeting.
(PEB PKESS ASSOCIATION ) CmiisTcnußCH March 1. The Rifle Association meeting opened at Hillsborough this afternoon, there being a fresh high wind and bright sun. Miss Gapes, in the absence of Mrs Gapes, the Mayoress, performed the opening ceremony at 3 o'clock and the shooting began immediately. Major Sonimerville, briefly addressing the competitors, recognised the justice of the Southerners to have a permanent range in the {South to be used alternately with one in the North Island. In the Nelson match, not counting for the belt, only the 200 yards was fired. The other two ranges will be completed tomorrow. The following arc the highest scores in tho range completed : — l'rivate Aitchcsoti (Kaitangata) and Private Scott (Hon. Reserve, Christchurch), 31 each ; Gunner Greenshields (Auckland), Wagstatf (Lyttelton), Chapman (Wairoa), Capt. tiallinger (Putonc), tSergt. Anderson (Wanganui), Grace (Petone), Williams (Wellington), King (Oamaru), Dobbs (Auckland), Rudd (Queenstown), Robilliard (Kaiapoi), and Stavnard (Kumaro), each 33. The present champion, A. BalJinger, scored 31. The following is a list of the exchainpions competing at the meeting, in addition to the present champion (A. Ballinger) :— W Ballinger, 1879; Churton, 1881 ; White, 1887 ; Parslow, 1889; Williams, 18 ( JO ; Kruse, 18'Jl ; Doughty, I*U2 : and Ross, who on three occasions won the Carbine Championship. The most noticeable amongst the absentees is Major Purne.M, of Wanganui. HiLLsuououdii, This Day. .Shooting resumed shortly after eight o'clock. The weather was very fine at the time, but as the day wore on a fresh north-east wind sprang up. The shooting is not so good as yesterday, and several of those who came back with good scores last night burst this moruiug. The following are leading scores, at 500 yards, in the Nelson match : — Ross, Napier, eH ; Tiffen (Gisborue), Wakelin (Christchurch), and Gray (Dunedin), 83; Warring (Huuterville), Spiers (Oamaru), Guudersou (Christ r phurph). Chicken Oyoqdyille), Loveday (WoodvilU'), Jones (Dunediu), rfmnphries (Waijnikurua), and Fairs (Auckland), iYI. It lias been decided to fire the team match to-morrow. Duly eighty out of two hundred aud ten men live iv the camp. Later. The Nelson match is finished.
