ARTESIAN WELLS. TO THE KDITOK OF TflK STAH Sir, — I, like your correspondent who the other day suggested that a boring should be commenced at the top of the hill on Mr Lethbridge's run, which, if successful, would result in the possibility of a reservoir being formed for the supply of water by gravitation to the towu of Feilding, do not pretend to possess any practical knowledge of this subject, but a paragraph in this eveuiug's Star stating that an attempt to obtain an artesian water supjily at Halcombe has beeu abandoned after reaching a depth of 500 feet has forcibly brought to my mind the desirability of obtaining the opinion of an experienced geologist as to the probability of success in any attempt to obtain an artesian water supply iv Feildiug. It appears to me that unless the underlying strata iv Feilding and the district is approximately known any attempt to obtain a supply of water at tho surface by means of an artesian boring would be a matter of mere speculation, which it would be desirable to avoid if possible. I, of course, do not wish to discourage the promoters of the attempt vow couteuiplated, but think it an well to give them a hint of a possible objection being made to it until they are sheltered under competent scientific advice. I do not remember how far below the surface the first boring in Manchester Square was carried, nor through what strata the boriug pierced. Did the boring go through au impermeable stratum down to one of a permeable character ? I am, etc., Samuel. Goodbeuere. February 13th, 1804.
