London Wool Sales.
Messrs Barraud and Abraham received the following wool report by the 'Frisco mail from their London Agents, Messrs It. T. Turnbull and Co., dated December 29th, 1893 :— Wool. The fifth and concluding series of wool sales for the year closed on the 14th inst. The attendance of buyers on which we commented in our. last, was maintained to the end, and competition at the values current at the previous auctions was good and brisk, but it never became keen enough to raise prices. The French competition was more active than for other parts of the Continent, and the Home trade bought with, more spirit than might have been expected. America was easily satisfied with some 600 bales, as tariff reform is still some distance ahead. Good Merinos are pretty much on the level of closing September-October values, faulty and very greasy descriptions fully 5 per cent lower. Crossbreds, which were not in very full supply, met with keen demand at firm prices and have held their position well. There are to be six series of auctions of wool in 1894, and it is hoped that the more frequent offerings at the shorter intervals will tend to prevent severe fluctuations, and that, with the staple on an intrinsically low basis, the comparatively small stocks, the possibility of trade revival and eader tariff in America, and the improbable material increase of flocks in the meantime, we may see some improvement in the wool trade before we come to review the results of 1894 ; at the same time it is hardly to be expected that any movement in an upward direction can be otherwise than slow and gradual.
