A very severe thunderstorm passed over North Canterbury yesterday, the thunder peals being deifening and the reverberation shaking bouses Several trees were struck by lightning, aud a number of windows broken. The current ran along a wire fence, heating the wire and setting fire to gorse. and split several posts. And 10 yards of fencing wire entirely disappeared. A calf was killed by lightning at South brook, and at Rangiora a horse was kuooked down and stunned. At Rangiora the telephone bells kept up a constant ringing during the storm. The hailstorm which followed severely damaged the crops. Dunedin, January 30, The General Committee of the City Council recorntneud, with reference to complaints as to choir-singing in the street, that a bye.law on the subject be drafted and brought into operation.
