Last year there were 1130 people killed, and 4495 injured, on the railways in the United Kingdom. Mr C. H. Hiuman has been giving his clever and popular lecture "The Tabernacle in the Wilderness " to the Hawera people. It is calculated that the yearly production of paper in the world is fully 3.000,000,0001 b weight, and, according to an estimate which lias been made, this emanates from 2891 mills. The date for closing the tenders for additions to Mf Mountfort's house has been extended by the architect, Mr C. Bray, from the 13th to the lbtb instaut, at noon. Tenders are invited by Messrs James and Heaps, architects, for the erection of a two storied, twelve roomed residence at Cheltenham, for J. R. Johnston Esq. Plans and specifications may be seen at the offices of the architects. To-night in the Assembly Rooms the Polytechnic Combination Company will give one of their variety entertainments, when all the latest comic and sentimental songs, dances etc. will be introduced. As the company appears for only one night, and the prices are low, they should have a good house. At the tennis courts on Thursday Mr Dyer beat Mr Brabant in a heat for the Championship Singles 6-2 and 6-2, and Miss A. H. Fry (scratch) beat Miss Saxon (half 30 and a bisque) 6-3 and 6-2 in a heat for the Ladies Singles Handicaps. Yesterday afternoon Mrs Mac- ! artliur (half 1/i) beat Miss Giescn (half ! 30 and a bisque) 6-4 and 6-1 in another heat of the same handicap, An error occurred in a local which appeared in Thursday's issue of the Star i in reference to Mr Bradford having sold | out his coaching plant to Mr Peterson. | It was stated that the latter would com- i ; meuce running the coach and mail business on Monday next, but it should have < read " coach business " only, as Messrs ; Berry and Trevena of the Carbine stables have the mail contract between Feikling and Birmingham. By the midday train yesterday Mr McKeever arrived in Feilding and will be the guest of Mr \\\ \V. Corpe, of Makino, for a few days. Mr McKeever is the head of the firm of Coey and Co., provision merchants, of London, and has travelled through Australia and has just arrived from the South Island and "Wellington. This firm are connected with the butter committee which recently held a conference in London, and are large importers of the article. • Operations on the State farm at Levin arc to be commenced almost immediately. Mr Winterbourne, the manager, has been over the ground and selected a site for the homestead, and is making arrangements for a road through the block. Eight hundred acres of the area purchased, adjoining Mr P. Bartholomew's new mill, fronting the railway line, is to be cut up for sale, and the balance with a frontage to the road about to be made through the block, is to be reserved for the farm. Messrs Billeus and Bunting, photographers, of Palmerston North, propose opening a studio for a term at Feilding in about a month. This firm have recently made extensive additions to their studio and have imported several pretty rustic and other seats, making it one of the best on the coast. To enable residents of this district taking advantage of the concessions now offered the proprietors have extended the limit of time for a further period. The concession is that the purchase of a 2s 6d ticket from one of their agents will entitle holders to one dozen cabinet photos and one eulargenjcut fur au additional ltfa 6d.
We are glad to learn that Mr W. H, Smith, the proprietor of the Manawatu Daily Times, is improving in health. Captain Edwin wired at 12-45 a.m. to-day: — "North east to north and ! west gales with rain after 12 hours from now. Glass further fall." We have to thank J. R. McMillan, Esq., the Hon. Secretary of the Foxton Racing Club, for a complimentary ticket for the season of 1894. Mr Carthew opened up his usua' monthly case of books and periodicals this morning. The selection is particularly good. A public tea meeting will be held in the Wesleyan Church on Wednesday next to welcome the Rev Mr Judkin to the district. A woman who was travelling on the Manchester Railway swallowed her false teoth in a fainting fit. She was put under an operation and the teeth were recovered, but she died in a few hours. The plans for the Volunteer Drillshed are about to be put in hand. We have not heard that the Volunteer Fire Brigade officials intend to apply for any space in the proposed new building. If they propose to do so they should " wake up." In the list of nominations published yesterday for the ladies' bracelet to be competed for by the members of the Manchester Rides, the name of Miss J. Smith, nominator of Vol A. Richards, was accidental^ omitted. The FeUding Oval presents a very lively appearance of an evening just now, and judging by the number who are training, the Birmingham Sports are creating more excitement than the Feilding Boxing Day Sports do. A Hamilton resident, who suggested to the Victorian Railway Commissioners the advisability of issuing tickets for £3 for six weeks during the holidays overall lines, wns presented wnh one of the tickets for his sensible idea. Diphtheria is spreading at Home. A London paper recoids the fact that during the last two months four huudred new cases of diphtheria have bocu reported wetkly, and instead of the usual average of something under thirty deaths a week, tboro have from eighty to ninety. Thoro have been some big tallies made at Mr Duncan's wooLshsd, Paraekaretu, the last few dajs. A boxing match, which excited a great deal of interest, between Harry Laing, the New Zealauder, and Joe (Joodard, for the championship of Australia and a substantial sum, took place in Melbourne ou New Year's night. Laiog won after 12 rounds, punishing his oppouent severely, A number of polo ponies passed through Feildiug by the 11 a.m. train this morning to take part in the polo match to be played to-day at Pahnerston between Rangitikei and Manawatu. There were some splendid animals amongst the number, Where is the Feildiug Pole Club ? A Presbyterian elder up Auckland way was recently asked bow the kirk got along. " Aweel, we bad 400 members. In connection with the start to be made at the works of the Longburu Freezing Company we have to direct the special attention of stockowners to the fact that a competent person has been engaged to draft stock, free of charge, for them so as to obviate any possibility of any being rejected at the works as unsuitable for the Home market. A notification from the secretary, A. Macphersou Esq., to that effect appears iv our advertising columns. We know it is impossible for the son of a New Zealand Journalist to be, but the following " tarradiddle " makes i( clear as mud that the " son of an Eng lish journalist " can be like any othei " Cilobe trotter : " — The son of a London journalist writes to his father from New Zealand warning immigrants againsi coming to this colony.
