Retirement of Dr Lemon.

|Feb Press Association,] Wellington, December 14. Mr W. Gray, Seoretary of the General Post Office, will assume the positions of Secretary of Post Offices, and Superintendent of Telegraphs, and Mr Hose, Inspector of Post Offices, will be appointed Assistant Seoretary to the Post and Telegraph Offices. It is intended to appoint an electrician to the head of the Telegraph Department with the rank of Chief Jnspector, and the position will probably fall on one of the Inspectors in either Christohureh, Auckland, Dunedin, or Napier, but Mr Ward, wbo left for the South this afternoon, states that his decision will not be known until his arrival in Christchurch to-morrow. Dr Lemon will be granted three months' leave of absence from January Ist, and on its expiration he retires from the auperintendency, though he does not altogether sever his connection with the Department. In his letter suggesting that he should be allowed to retire, Dr Lemon expressed his willingness to act as consulting electrician to the Department for a small fee, and Cabinet unanimously decided to act on the suggestion. It was mentioned that Dr Lemon intended to enter upon farming pursuits on his property in the Manawatu district, but this he denies, and states he will shortly open up a large electrical business in the city ; whether on his own account or in connection with others is not allowed to transpire. The doctor explains that, after continuous work for upwards of 30 years, he desires to be relieved from the careß of office, and looks back with pleasure at the strides the Department has made since he entered the service in 1863.
