Report of Fat Stock Show and Sale.

To the Maoawatu must be given the credit of the first fat stock show held in New Zealand, when Mr Matthew Henry, live stock salesman, held his first annual fat stock show and sale at his auction market, Palmerston North, yesterday. The stock forward would have done credit to a much larger show. In the cattle classes, Mr Reaney, manager for the Hon. W. W. Johnston, exhibited bullocks in two classes, as per priz&list, which would have taken some beating even with, more formidable competition. This gentleman, as will be seen, carried . away the lion's share of the prizes. The pen of bullocks which secured the special prize as most suitable for freezing, were really good, serviceable cattle, carrying a sufficiency of prime beef without that superfluous weight so noticeable in heavier cattle. Mr D. Fraser, of Bulls, bad also two exhibits of bullocks, useful butchers' beasts, and for which he obtained third prize in their respective classes. In the female class, Mr F. Perry, on account of Sir James Prendergast, was the only exhibitor. Coming to the sheep classes, Mr Allan, on account of D. Manson, Esq., exhibited two pens — one of cross-bred Shropshire 4-tooth wethers, and another of cross-bred Shropshire maiden ewes. Both were of excellent quality and well classed, but the ewes were the feature of the show, and for condition and general evenness of exhibit Mr Allan deserves the highest praise. It is a matter for vegret that they had no competitors, as in that case their quality would have stood out in bold relief, probably against all comers. The sale attendance was very small, but the lack of numbers was compensated for by the goodwill and readiness of buyers to operate, the cattle particularly meeting a ready sale, the whole being acquitted at good value. Subjoined is the prizelist and sale quotations : — Cattle.— Pen of 4 bullocks over 3 years and 6 months— l and 2, Hon. W. W. Johnston (per P. Reaney) ; 3, D. Fraser.
