CARNAGE WINS THE DERBY.
(PER PBESB ASSOCIATION.) Mblboubnk, November 4. For the opening day of the V R.C. Spring Meeting the weather was fine. The attendance was the record for Derby day. Sternchaser wrenched a fetlock, and was unable to start in the Melbourne Stakes. Melbourne Stakes — Loyalty, 1 ; Newman, 2; Jeweller, 3. Other starters — Malvolio, The Admiral, Portsea, Straban, Brockleigb, Camoola, Titan,' Creuiorne, and Vakeel, Betting— 7 to 4 against Camoola, 3 to 1 Loyalty, 7 to 1 Titan, 10 to 1 others. Grand race ; won by a nosft Time, 2min BJsec. V.R.C. Derby, U miles— Carnage (Jnmes Gough), " 1 ; The Sailor Prince (Moore), 2; Pounamn (White), 3. The other starters were— Patron, txarcon, Light Artillery. Salient, Projectile, Maru, Trenchant, Solamim. Betting— 3 to 1 agninst Patron, 4 to 1 Sailor Prince, 6 to 1 Ponnaimi, 7 to 1 Carnage and Pnlvil. 10 to 1 Trenchant and Salient Pounamn cut out the running at a great pace, and led into the straight. 'When near the distance post Gough let Carnage out, who run through the field as if they were standing still, and despite the strenuous efforts on the part of Moore and White the near relative of Carbine won by a length and a half, Pounamn half a length away third Time, 2min 39sec. Mnnbirnong Plate, fivo furlongs.— Dreamland, 1 ; Forward, 2 ; Dryden, 3 All Mnrled but Eitidsford, who w<is in jured on Thursday. Won easily by a length and a quarter. Time, lniin 64 sec
