Wanganui Education Board's Finances

APPEAL TO THE GOVERNMENT. At the meeting of the above Board held yesterday, Mr Carson moved, That this Board is under the imperative necessity of again claiming the serious attention of the Minister of Education to its impoverished condition in the matter of funds for building purposes. That it be pointed out to the Hon Mr Beeves that, for the purpose of meeting the urgent wants of a widespread district, in which new settlement is constantly going on, the Board is practically penniless. That the pitiful balance of some £200 is all the Board bas wherewith to meet the year's demands for painting, repairing, fencing, improving grounds, and building new sciiooibooses and teachers' residences ; and that, conse* quently, the Board will be compelled to cease absolutely all operations in those directions until further funds are supplied by the Government That a copy j of this resolution be forwarded to tbe Hon. the Premier, to the members of the House of Representatives for this Educational District, to School Com* mittres, and to Head Teachers in the Board's employ. The motion was eec« onded by Mr Fry, and after discussion was carried unanimously. Mr Bridge moved, Mr Fry seconded, an? it was carried, That a circular be sent to School Committees informing them of tbe Board's position with regard to the Building Grant this year, and that unless money for building purposes is found by Government, it will be impossible for the Board to undertake new buildings or make grants for additions, fences, etc., until the building grant for 1891 is re ceived. _______________
