Says an exchange : — The Rev O'Bryen Houre, who is standing for Chrjstchurch, is doing so in a perfectly* independent way. He has not consulted his Bishop, his churchwardens, or his vestry ; but he has, it is said, succeeded in preaching his church emptf. As, however, he is said to be a tuan of independent means, he, perhaps, caros little for this. It is said that Mr E. M. Smith will be returned for the New Ply month seat bj a majority of 2 to 1 over his opponent, Col. Trimble ; at any rate, those who know assert that he is quite 6a fe for the seat. I. Per Press Association] Auckland, October 31. The selection of Sir George Grey and Messrs Thompson and Napier as the Liberal candidates for the city is the all-absorbing topic of conversation. Sir George Grey has decided to retire from the Parnell contest, and come out as a candidate for one of the city seats. Chbistchl'bcu. October 31. The Rev C. H. Bradbury, form erf j minister of the Ferry lioad Congregational Church and now in Wellington, is announced as a candidate for Chrigtchurch. This Day. Mr Evison, editor of the " Truth." a candidate for the Chris' church seat, addressed an audience of two thousand last night. He met a most cordial reception and was accorded a vote of thanks. He announced himself an independent, but promised to support any Government measures that were good.
