The Premier at Stratford
(PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Stratford, October 3i. The Premier addressed a public meeting in the Town Hall, which was densely packed, the audience including many ladies. The Premier spoke for an hour and a half on the questions of Party Government, female franchise, co-operative works, and other subjects referred to in his previous speech. He said the Government proposed to deal wilh the question of local government next ses> sion. It was also intended to arrange to enable Crown tenants to borrow on their holdings. He defended the laud, policy of the Government, claiming that a saving of £53,000 a year ira» effected thereby. He defended the payment to the Legislative Councillors on the ground that they were entitled to be paid from the date of appointment, as the payment was a j early one. The next election was the first one in which they would have one«man«one»roll and equnlity of sexes, and the Government was not afraid to trust the women of New Zealand, upon whose judgment they could depend, The Government was entitled to credit for many useful measures which their opponents hnd tulke<i of for years, but which the present Ministry passed into law. The Government was not one to pull down or destroy, hut was rapidly building up the Colony into a prosperous stale, whose prosperity was lite envy of the whole of the Australian Colonies. At the conclusion of his nddress a motion of confidence in the Govern* ment carried unanimously.
