The Coming Elections
« A meeting of electors interested in furthering Mr Lethbridge's candidature for the Rnngitikei scat, will be held in the Town Hall, Birmingham, on Friday next at 4 p.m. Tom Carter, a whilom political agitator, is leaving the Torpedo Corps and purposes contesting one of the scats for Wellington City. The Premier will speak at New Ply mouth to morrow. He will, amongst other things, develop the local government portion of the policy of the Cabinet. The lending feature of the new system is the establishment of district councils, which will perform many of the functions of county councils and road boards, and have the full control of charitable aid. These bodies are to have an assured income, partly dependent on the contributions from the districts themselves. The Premier will also have something to say about (he policy of advances to Crown tenants direct from the funds held by various Government departments; and lie will explain how it is proposed to initiate n system under which English capital will be furnished to farmers on the security of real property, through the agency of the Government, whereby the assistance of the middlemen will be dispensed with, the money going direct to those requiring it, and able to give security. _ I (Per Press Association.) Wellington, October 30. Thomas Dwan, one of the candidates for the City, addressed a crowded meeting of electors to-night, including many Indies. He opposed the direct veto, but favoured grants to denominational schools, also taking control of railways out of the hands ot the Commissioner?, State bank, elective Legislative Council, Justices of the Peace and Governor, and was a strong supporter of the cooperative system* He received a vote of thanks. Auckland, October 30. The Liberal Association have decided to run Messrs W. F. Napier and F. Thompson for Auckland. It is not decided upon about the third man. but intend to ask Sir George Grey to stand instead ot contesting Parnell with F. Lawry. Marton, October 30. Mr J. Ivess, while addre^ing a rm-et* ing at Ohingaiti on Saturday evening, charged yoraeone occupying • high posi» tion in the country with endeavouring to bribe him, by an offer of £250. to retire from the contest, and said he would rather commit suicide than accept a bribe. Donedin, October 30. Mr Clias. Hayne?, the present Mayor, and Mr James Gore, former representa* tive, have definitely decided to contest Duncdin City. Napier, October 30. Mr John Bennett bas retired -from the contest for the East Coast seat, which leaves the field for Messrs Carroll and Delautour. Invkrcargill, October 30.
