The Carcoar Tragedy
—• . • A Sydney newspaper of a, recent date says that Mrs Phillips, one of the victims of the recent tragedy, has recovered sufficiently to be told of her husband's death 1 . She received the news as if prepared for it, having all along suspected that her husband had died from the injuries inflicted on him. Her memory has become quite clear as to the incidents of the terrible night, and she has given further particulars of what occurred. She says that Glagson, whom she positively identifies, struck her husband with the tomahawk as he entered the dining* room, and without giving him the slightest warning. Her husband fell, r and she rushed at his assailant and tore the mask from his face. The man then attacked her, first of all knocking the light out of her hand, though not before she fully recognised him. The man, seeing a move on the part of Mr Phillips, struck him a brutal blow on the face with the axe. Mrs Phillips then ran upstairs in the dark, and the man followed her. On the way he met . *? Miss Cavanagh, who had been alarmed, and at once turned his attention to her, killing the unfortunate young lady >■ with one sweep of the weapon he car ! ried. The man then followed Mrs Phillips into her bedroom, where lie cruelly hacked her on the face with his axe. While the ruffian was performing his blood-thirsty work upstairs the poor bank manager must have re> covered somewhat, and attempted to raise an alarm. He crawled to the window for this purpose, but it is supposed that he saw some accomplice, out- : side, which made him turji towards the hall door. While making his way feebly in this direction, the murderer came downstairs, and realising his intention, set to work to cut him down, chopping the poor fellow to death. It is not a fact that the hand of the child Gladys Phillips has had to be amputated. The little sufferer is rapidly recovering.
