Manawatu Road Board

The monthly meeting of the above was held yesterday. Present — Wardens Stevens (in the chair), Stubbs, and Luxford. Correspondence wag received from the Treasury, notifying that the Board's application for a loan of £848 for construction of two bridges over the Oroua river had been approved of. Reports were received as follows : — The Inspector of Slaughterhouses reported that the slaughterhouses in the Board's district were in a satisfactory condition. — Adopted. The Inspector of Bye-laws reported that he had laid an information against a wood carter for allowing his firewood to lie on the public road between R.itigitikei line and Buunythorpe road. He also intended taking proceedings against some of the wood carters and timber waggoners for not having licenses. Messrs Heppel, Hoist, and four other ratepayers waited on the Board and asked that the railway line road • from Boundary road to Bunnythorpe be repaired. Warden Stubbs said the Board was agreeable to put the road in repair immediately they obtained the 80 links of ground from the Railway Commissioners. He advised the'deputation to bring pressure to bear on the Railway Commissioners in connection with this matter. Mr Rogers said it was a disgrace to the Board to spend borrowed money on the road and allow it to get in such a bad state of repair. The Chairman having pointed out that the Board could not legally expend rates on the road which was in the hands of the Railway Commissioners. Mr Heppel asked the Board to undertake the repairs, provided the settlers undertook to indemnify them to the extent of the cost of the repairs. On the motion of Warden Stubbs, seconded by Warden Luxford, it was resolved, That the Clerk be again instructed to write to the Commissioners urging the necessity of granting the extra 80 links on the Bunnythorpe road, also pointing out the dangerous state of the road. Mr Derby waited on the Board and asked that a ditch be cut on the road line fronting section 1732, Bunnythorpe. After discussing the matter with Mr Derby, it was decided to postpone taking any action for the present, the Chairman to inspect Mr Derby's property in the meantime. x Proposed by Warden Stubbs, seconded by the Chairman and carried, That the Engineer be instructed to call for tenders for repairs to road from James' Line to Bunnythorpe railway station on Bunnythorpe* Kairanga road. Accounts were passed for payment, and the Board then adjourned.
