The Recent Bank Tragedy
CHARACTER OP THE PRISONER. Bert Glttsson. who broke into the City of Sydney Bank at Carcoar, N.S.W., and committed such a foul murder, is about twenty six years of age. He was married six months ago, and at picnics and par* ties he and his wife were generally remarked upon as a handsome couple. Recently Glasson had been spending money freely, and his friends, knowing that his means were limited, wondered where the money came from. It has tanked out that during the past few months he has forged cheques amounting to sums rariously stated at from LIUOO to LI2OO. The bank at Carcoar sold bis effects, and this brought him to the end of his resources. When Glaason's ma?k was pulled off by Mrs Phillips, she ejaculated, "Good God, Bertie Glasson, has it come to this ? I know you." When Glauon was arrested the following letter addressed to his wife was found in his pocket. "My Darling Little Wife, Room 198. Hotel Metropole, Sydney. — Ob, my precious queen, 1 am going mad, and hare felt it coming on for some time. I came to myself te day (Sunday) in one of Stanfield's paddocks, and I had on a black suit of clothes all covered with blood. What I have done I hare no idea. I remember leaving Sydney to go to Orange, but I don't know if I have been there or not. I suppose I have. I feel so terribly strange now, that I don't know where I want to go. If I get lost and die in the bush, I hope I shall be found and you will get this letter. Better for me to be dead than for you to haTo a mad husband. If I live to get back to the Hotel Metropole I'll never leave you a day. I will try to walk to Cowra to catch a train."
