Manchester Road Board

. : -*-rr The ordinary monthly meeting of the Manchester Road Board was held in the Board's office on Saturday afternoon. Present — Messrs F. Y. Lethbridge (chairman), Booth, Pearce, Conway, and Purkiss. An apology for non-attendance was received from Mr Geo. Wheeler. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The following correspondence was read : — From Purkiss and Son, Halcombe, applying for slaughter license. From Fred Gorslitz, asking for the name of Mrs Cuff to be placed on the rate roll in place of his for section No. 6, suburban, North Halcombe. From W. Ladd, asking for permission to erect a protecting fence on road opposite sections 225, 226, 227, 228, fronting Worcester street, Ashurst. From C. J. Wycherley, Ashurst, asking the Board to clean out a certain drain opposite his property, sections 14, and 29. > From D. Conchie,' secretary Ashurst Foresters' Hall Company, asking the Board to. complete footpath and enclosing cheque for £l 8s 4d for metalling on Winchester street. From 1). Laing and H. G. Tickers, asking for the name of the latter to be placed on the. rate roll for section 9, sub-division G, Manchester Block. From G. Wheeler, Halcombe, telegram stating the bridge over Makara, on Stamvay road, was unsafe ■ and required immediate attention. From Geo. Wehringer, Palmerston North, stating he had not authorised anyone to apply for a slaughter license in his name. From Colonial Secretary's office, Wellington, informing the Board that no petition had been presented to the Governor praying for the incorporation of Ashurst as a borough. From Charles Thompson, J. Brewer, IX Davis, J. W. Davis, and J. King, a petition asking the Board to form and metal that portion of Worcester street between the Feilding road and Winchester Street. From H. H. Richardson, clerk Ranjjitikei County Council, enclosing statement of expenditure on Onepuhi bridge from May 4 to September 7, £19 19s 6d. Also, account for amount due by Board, including amount due - on February 23rd last (£139 lls Id). Che Engineer's report was read; the following is * precis :— FeildingAshurst road is Tery much cut up in places between Colyton and Aahurst, and will require about 1000 yards of gravel. He proposed to replace th« culvert washed out with 8 feet concrete pipe. Btanway road— The bridge over the Makara stream is in a bad state. Waituna road— Beeommendad putting in another culvert. Makino road— This road from Wilson's road to Stanway is giving way in place* and requires 150 yards , of graveL There is no road from section 84, Scandinavian settlement, along the south-eastern boundary of section 26, sub-division 0. The cemetery road will not be exclusively used for the cemetery. A letter was read from Gk G. Walker, reporting on various roads and making suggestions re. the 'same. It was resolved, That the application of Jas. Purkiss and Son for a slaughtering license be granted. Erewini Parauiki, an aboriginal native, waited on the Board on behalf of himself and other natives, asking that fences be erected along the road ■ line through Tikorangi reserve (about 57 chains). Mr H. J. Bqoth acted as interpreter. It was resolved, That the natives be informed the fence will be erected as soon as the Board is in funds. From H. L. Sherwill, asking for reply to a letter re the refund of £20 in connection with roads in the Stanway village. Proposed by Mr Booth, seconded by Mr A. Conway, That the name of Heywood George Tickers be placed on the rate roll for section 9, sub- \ division G, in place of D. Laing, as requested. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Jas. Purkiss, seconded by Mr W. G. Pearce, That Mr Ladd's application to erect a protection fence opposite section 225 to 228, Ashurst, be granted on conditions that the fence be not more than three feet on road-line. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Booth, seconded by Mr Lethbridge, That the Board are unable to undertake the work applied for, viz., making Worcester street, from want of funds. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Pearce, seconded by Mr Conway, That the engineer be instructed to call for tenders for the supply and delivery of 1000 yards of metal between Colyton and Ashurst ; also, 200 yards on Bunnythorpe-Ash-urst road, tenders to be in at next meeting. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Pearce, seconded by Mr Conway, That Mr Purkiss act as Treasurer for this meeting.-— Carried. Mr Lethbridge reported that the Makino stream was overflowing down Forlong's road, at the ford, and flooding adjoining properties. Accounts amounting to £426 lls 2d were passed for payment, and the Board adjourned.
