A SOLICITOR IX TROUBLE. 45000 DEFICIENCY. (P£R PHEB9 ASSOCIATION). Sydney. October 4. Dr Higffins, Auxiliary Rowan Catholic Bishop of Sydney, has been chosen ArchBishop of Adelaide, in succession to Dr Reynolds. The Mayor has suspended the City Solicitor, George Merriuian, for alleged irregularities extending over a period of nearly two years. It is believed^there is a deficiency of between four and fiye thousand pounds. The sums involved comprise monies handed to Merriinan to pay for the city work which, it is found, has not Leon paid for. Merriman was lately very ill and during his absence his books were examined and the deficiency was discovered. This Day. A cable has been received that all those who left Australia to form a " New Australia " in Paraguay, South America, have arrived in good health, and have taken possession of the land selected for them. They appear to be delighted with the country and perfectly satisfied with the site granted. The Legislative Assembly has passed a resolution to the effect that sending H.M.S. Katoomba to Samoa is an in* fringement of the Defence Act. The Premier has given notice to rescind the motion. The Houbo has agreed to the rearrangement of electors names and boundaries. Melbocbnb, This D&y. The V.R.C. baa refused to renew the license of Cuadeu, the ox-New Zealand jockey. An influential deputation has asked the Government to subsidize the Vancouver line of steamers and to make Melbourne a port of call. The Premier^ in reply, advised the deputation to make a definite proposition. Brisbane, October 4. The Postmaster-General reports that although, the Noumean cable is ostensibly the first link of line to connect Australia and Vancouver no exclusive right has been given to France, and the Government of Queensland is free to enter into any arrangement with another company for a separate line. This Day. The Minister of Lands expects to have everything ready by the end of next week for the people to go on the land in co-operative communities. The Postmaster-General reports that the reduction of postage rates between Queensland and Great Britain has resulted in a loss amounting to nearly £5000 per anuum.
