Arrest of an Absconding Bankrupt
[Per Press Association! Auckland, September 9 Just as the Mariposa was leaving the wharf a man named Alfred Joseph Kirk was arrested by Private Detective Hughes, charged with breach of the Bankruptcy Act of 1892, there being reason to believe he was about to leave the Colony of New Zealand without the consent of bis creditors. "W. It. Cook (Cook and Gray) was the petitioning creditor and represented by F. Baume. Accused was handed over to Chief Detective Grace, who took him to the station and searched him ; found twelve twenty-dollar pieces value £60, ten £20 notes, five 10s in gold, a lot of half dollars, 8s 9d in silver, and a letter of credit for £200 in the name of Chas. Smith. A passage ticket by the San Francisco steamer, bearing that name, was also found upon accused. Mr T. D. Calister was also present upon behalf of the Official Assignee in Bankruptcy. Kirk was formerly a storekeeper at Hawera. ______________
