«. SUSPENSION OF A BUILDING SOCIETY. (TEH PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Melhockne, This Day. Two hundred and forty-eight tenders were received for the Metropolitan Board of Works £3,000,000 loan. The tenders aggregated £415,000. The average was between £98 5s aud £98 7s 6d. The Primage Duty Bill has passed the Legislative Assembly. An attempt was made, without success, to exclude hemp and flax. In consequence of tho persistent drain on the resources of the Victorian Building Society during the prolonged and arduous struggle to maintain its position, the directors have decided to call a meeting of creditors and shareholders. On Saturday last the balance-sheet showed that the shareholders funds were L' 280,000; indebtedness to depositors L 513.000, other creditors L 95.000. Assets, present value of loan L«29,000 f offices L 32.000. Sydney, September 7. At a meeting of the creditors of Hi ley Brothers, drapers, the liabilities were stated at L 40,900, aud tho assets at L 15.400. Brisbane, Sept. 7. Mr Harton, Attorney-General of New South Wales, who has just returned from Vancouver, speaks highly of the prospects ot a trade between Canada and Australia. A trial shipment of canned beef and fruit sold readily at good prices.
