House of Representatives.
The House met at 2.30. Mr Seddon informed the House that Mr Cadman had accepted the portfolios of Minister for Justice and Mines, and lie (Mr Seddon) had assumed the portfolio of Native Minister. Mr Cadman had been sworn in during the day. The Premier also stated what Bills the Government intended to drop, and he thought the remaining business should be disposed of by the end of the month. Mr Rolleston condemned Mr Cadman's re-admission to the Ministry and thought Mr Seddons's accession to the portfolio of Native Minister would create a very uneasy feeling. He said a slur had been cast on Parliament by a Minister of the Crown appealing over the head of the Supreme Court to tbe electors of Auckland, and his opinion was there could be no solution of Cadman's case without a Parliamentary enquiry. Mr Seddon warmly defended Mr Cadman. He said it was the latter's over sensitiveness that had induced him to resign his seat in the House. Mr Rolleston's attack was uncalled for and unfair, and Government accepted the full responsibility for the appointment. As to a Parliamentary committee, lie would not send his worst enemy to be tried by that kind of tribunal. Mr Cadman's native land transactions attached no stigma whatever to that hon. gentleman or Mr W. C. Smith. Mr Shera, as a Government supporter, condemned Government for taking Mr Cadman back into the Cabinet and he (Mr Shera) would consider his position. The Ell Empowering Bill was put through its final stages. The Magistrates Courts Bill was in Committee up to the supper adjournment, but no amendments of any consequence have been made in the measure. Several other clauses in the Magistrate's Courts Bill were slightly amended by the Committee. The Supreme Court Practice Procedure Bill passed through Committee without amendment. The Public Health Act, 1876, Amendment Bill, Submarine Tele graph Cables Protection Bill, were passed through Committee without amendment. All the Bills were reported, the Supreme Court Practice and Procedure Acts Amendments Bill, Public Health Act, 1876, Amendment Bill being put through the final stages, and the House rose at 2.10 a.m.
