WELLINGTON V. MANAWATU. The annual match between the Wellington and Manawatu representatives took place on the Show Ground, Palmerston, on Saturday, and ended in a win for the visitors, after a very hard fought game, by 8 points to 5. In ihe first spell Wellington had the advantage of a strong wind, but the local forwards played so well that very little advantage was gained, and the only score registered in this spell was a try obtained by Williams for Wellington, Shortly after tbe commencement of the second term, Jewell scored for Manawatu. Matravers took the kick and, although from a difficult angle, registered a beautiful goal amidst great cheering. Both* sides strained every nerve to increase the score, and the Wellington men getting the ball into local territory, Baumber potted a goal. Shortly afterwards Ward secured the ball from a scrum and crossed the line, the game ending — Wellington 8 points, Manawatu 5. The Manawatu forwards were superior to the visitors, who were much heavier. Mr Fache, of Wellington, acted as referee, but did not give satisfaction.
