John Oliver, a very old settler, died today, aged 81. He arrived here in 1853, and held many offices in the Canterbury Provincial Council. He was Provincial Secretary, and afterwards Speaker. On his retirement from that position he was appointed Provincial Auditor, a position he held till the abolition of the provinces, and subsequently held a somewhat similar position ander the general Government.
