Stock Markets
Messrs Gorton and Sons report as follows on their yesterday's Feilding sale. Entries were smaller than usual, but bidding for cattle and sheep were good, at quite up to recent prices. AVe quote :—Cattle — Forward bullocks £5 18s; 2to 2^-year steers, £4 5s ; milch cows, £4 10s to £6 10s ; store cows, £3 18s 6d ; weaners and yearlings mixed, £2 7s 9. Sheep — Hoggets, 7s 8d to 10s 8d ; store wethers, 11s 7d, empty ewes, 7s 2d. Messrs Lowes and lorns held their usual fortnightly sale at Masterton on Wednesday last. The sale was small but upon the whole spirited, a much greater quantity of stock could have found purchasers. The top price of the season was obtained for a line of fat wethers bred and fed by Mr A. Matthews of Masterton, viz., 14s lOd and 14s lid : good Romney hoggets, lls 9d ; old ewes in lamb, 6s 6d; mixed ditto 6s ; small lambs, 5s 3d ; light weight beef steers, ; £6 10s ; forward ditto, £5 7s 6d to £5 15s; young heifers rising 2 years 62s 6 ; steers same age low in condition 60s ; dairy cows Spring calvers, but old, 65s to 80s ; calves 15s to 33s ; hacks £6 and £6 ss; horses generally very dull of sale.
