Floods in FeUding
( The heavy rains of Tuesday and last night resulted in the Kiwitea and Makino streams being almost bank high. When this happens the lower part of the town, from the Corporation Barracks to the centre of Manchester Btreet,' is generally overflowed, and ' this morning was ho exception to the rule, the streets there being impassable ftf .pedestrians. In Kimbolton road, from Wilson's Boarding- ' house to the Manchert^r Hdtel; "the water rose over the side ohannels and footpaths, rendering it most difficult to do business in that neighbourhood. Mr Cobbe v s main entrance was for a time inaccessible, bnt by means of a raised planking that in* convenience was qtdokly overcome. The cellars at the Manchettesand Mrs Hastie's Hotels had a considerable quantity of water in thorn. The footbridge in : Denbigh street was washed, away. A cow of Mr Watts, the builder, which was in a paddock near his house, was earned some 200 yards down the Makino stream before i it succeeded in regaining tern 1 firma. I Foot traffic last m&t near the Co-opi ! Stores was rehderet almost impossible, owing to the water channels hein&tmable to carry away the, great body of wa4er> Land situated near the Makino was flooded in every direction. The Oroua river was also in flood. Mr Say well's ; blabksmith's shop, had about' three feet of I water in it, and busmess was thus completely stopped a$ this establishment. The bridge over thY Makino leading to Awahuriwas rendeied useless fbrtrajpSo, as the approaches 01 tha town side Were washed away. - The train from tip north was stopped this morning by slips on the line on Wangaibu Hill, and that from the south was delayed at Turfttfna. Thef mail train went on at 12.17., but will probably, not go further than Haltotnbe until the line is clear. We have no exact particulars to hand. Owing to the pressure of urgent telegrams on the wires from railway officials, our cables and press telegrams are delayed. .,,,'
