Fire in Queen Street
A five roomed house in Queen Street wu barnl down about 1.80 yesterday morning, the inmates barely escaping with their lives. The dwelling was occupied by Mrs Liaeaman. bdf servant, and Mr Richards who was boarding with her. The family retired to bed about 10.80 on Sunday night leaving a very small fire in the grate, and it was there that the outbreak mast have originated. Mr Richards was awakened by hearing a slight noise which he fancied was somebody moving about in the sitting-room. On getting np and opening the door leading into that room, he found the whole place in a blaze. He had only time to rush back into his own room, at the same time hastily arousing Mrs Lissaman and the servant. He managed to escape by the back door in safety but had to rescue Mrs Lissaman and the servant through the window of their bedroom, as so fast did the flames spread, that they could not have got away by any other mean*. The neighbors, Messrs T. Evans and H Worsfold and their families were soon on the spot, but very few things were saved, bo quickly did the conflagration extend. Mrs Lissaman had made arrangement* to leave by the first train on Monday morning, everything being packed up in readiness. She saved nothing beyond hei handbag containing her money and jewellery. Mr Richards had a large boi ready packed, containing most of hii wearing apparel ; the box was placed overnight on the front veranda in antici* pation of an early removal, and this wai fortunately saved. However a handsome scarf pin and a few other articles were lost, and Mr Richards estimates his loss at about £5. By the time the Fire Brigade arrived nothing could be done to save the building, as the fire had obtained too strong a hold, and in less than an hoar and a half burnt itself out. We understand that the house was insured for £100, Mrs Lissaman'i piano for £60, and her furniture for £100, all in the Alliance Company.
