Obituary

It is with regret that we learn, from the Mercury, of the death of Mr R. J. Harris of Mnrton, which sad event took place yesterday afternoon. The late R. J. Harris was 57 years of age. He was born in County Antrim, Ireland. His mother dying when the family were quite young, his widowed father went with his nine children to Canada, in 1849. After being well educated in Canada, Robert J. Harris left for New Zealand, via New York and Panama, landing in this colony in January, 1867. He at once came to Turakina, and has resided in this district ever since. For oyer 20 years he has honourably filled the position of clerk, first to the old Highway Board, and afterwards to the County Council and Marton Borough Council. A well read man- kind, considerate, and always most courteous — he fully earned the respect I and goodwill of all with whom he came into contact. His death will be a great loss to the county and borough. He leaves a widow and two children, and one or two brothers, in the colony. The immediate cause of death was heart disease and a complexity of stomachic complaints.
