Pohangina Road Board
The usual monthly meeting of the above Board was held on Saturday last. Present — Messrs Lncus (chairman), Arbon, Burton, Dickin, and Richards. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The following correspondence was then dealt with : — From Duncan Mcßetli, stating that the j Engineer had forwarded an estimate of the cost of proposed works in No 3 ward Coal Creek Block, and milling that at a meeting held oh the 3rd instant, it was resolved to call a meeting of the ratepayers to take a vote for striking a special rate, so that a loan can be applied for. The meeting will be held in Hinningham, From A. A. Brown, of Palmerston, requesting the Board to lease him the gravel reserve on the Main ltidge road for a building site. From James Millan, Apiti, re trees standing on the road line opposite his property, and requesting the Board to have them felled. From the Manchester Road Board, stating that the funds at that Board's disposal, do not permit of the making of a road from the Pohangina road, to the eastern boundary of the Manchester Block. From the Colonial Secretary, statin" that the Board's special order re levyin« a special rate was published in the Gazette of the 2nd instant. From the Treasury, owing receipt of the voting paper used at the poll of ratepayers for the loan of i'6ooo for roads in No 2 ward, and stating that copies of the newspapers containing notices with reference to this loan must be forwarded to the Colonial Treasurer beforo the loan can be made. From Dr Monckton, Mercury Office, Marton, urging that the Board's advertisement be published in the Mercury, any arguments as to politics being beside' the real point, nor would comparisons as to alleged circulation be otherwise than narrow and invidious. This letter was ordered to be laid on the table. From Mrs Arnott calling the Board's attention to the impassable state of the Main Ridge road which requires immediate attention. From Edward Nix, and John Murphy, applying for payment for foiling road line. From tho Receiver of Land Itovonuo, stating that i'Bs4 8s 3d accrued thirds due to the Board is now payable, and only awaits instructions which bank this sum is to be remitted through. Mr Hayns' estimate of the amount required to be expended in No 3 ward was put in, amounting to £1687 12s Id. The Engineer also reported that he had arranged for the work to be carried out on Taonni road near Oroua river, between Messrs Denton and Bhllvo's property, and that this work will be commenced directly the feuce on Horseshoe bend is erected. Tho drawing for retiring members in May next, resulted in the Chairman and Mr Richards being chosen. way to pay the 28s charged for road formation, which amount was disputed by the Eiwitea Board. Resolved, That 8. T. Hunt and Co., be granted permission to erect a verandah in front of their butcher's shop. Resolved, That the Secretary write Messrs A. Seabury and F. Gorringe, informing them that the price paid by the Board for felling bush on road lines is 30s per acre, and that the Board cannot see its way to pay more than that sum. Resolved, That the following names be placed on the rate roll: — D. Fraser, in place of J. P. Anderson ; H. J. Gawler, in lieu of that of Mr Costall, and for that of Mr Hughley, section 31, block- X; W. Vicary, in place ot W. Brandt; and Mrs Vicary, in lzea of A. J. Richardson. Resolved, That Mr Hunt's offer of an acre for a gravel reserve at £10 be accepted, the Board paying ail expenses. . Resolved, That Mr John Gould's application for a licence to slaughter on section 5, block XI Apiti, be granted. Resolved, That Mr Hayns' be appointed slaughter house Inspector for the Board, and receive the fees in connection there with, as salary. Resolved, That Messrs Lucas and Arbon proceed to Wellington, and interview the Commissioner re the £500 that has been put on the estimates for roading the Totara Reserve, and the £1000 for the Oroua Coal Creek Block, and other matters. Resolved, That the Engineer be instructed to lay out the Oroua Valley road for tiimmiug and metalling from the Oroua river to the Feilding Block. Resolved, That the Board are willing to lease the gravel reserve to Mr A. A. Brown, he to bear the expense of lease and contract, and to leave all totara ; also that Mr Spurway be allowed to lease the gravel reserve joining section 7, block 7 Apiti, on the same terms. Resolved, That the Engineer be farther instructed to proceed with the construction of the roads in No 2 ward. Resolved, That the tenders of Messrs Nathan and McCarty for Nos. 1 and 2 contracts, at £430 7s lOd and* £366 12s 4d, respectively, and that of B. Home and Co. for the three bridges at £516, and that of Mr Shadbolt at £57 12s 6d for No 4 contract be accepted; and that fresh tenders be called for No 3 contract, to be in by Wednesday the 22ad inst., said tenders to be considered by Warden Dickin and the Engineer. Resolved, That the Engineer prepare estimates for a building for the Board's Offices on the section set apart by the Wanganui Harbor Board for that purpose. The monthly accounts were passed for payment and the Board then adjourned.
