Manchester Road Board

♦ The following addition il business was transacted after we wont to press on Saturday last : — The Engineer's report was as follows : — The undermentioned roads will require the following quantities of gravel to make them passable for the coining winter — Kimbolton road, 200 cubic yards ; Makino road, 1000 cubic yards ; Wilson's road, 600 cubic yards; Macka.y's road, 200 cubic yards ; Stanway road, 400 cubic i | yards ; Rangitawa road, 4HO cubic yards. I ; The overflow of the Makino creek on Forlong's road, runs out of the creek through the cutting made into the creek, and runs down a blind or overflow creek about three chains east of tlie Makino. This blind creek is lower than the bed of the Makino, and if something is not done to stop it, a great portion of the water from the Makino will -jo down the creek, and will flood a Inr^o urea of land. The proper way to effectually stop this overflow, would be to bridge the Makino, which would cost about .£l5O. The overflow could be stopped by lengthening the approach to the ford, and filling up and damming it back, this wou'l cost not less than £40. The Engineer lias also examined the Makino creek on the Spur road, and would not recommend the Board to make a ford as the formation of the land is similar to that on Forlong.s road, and would probably allow the water to run out of the cutting. The grades on the Rangitawa road an> very steep, there are three places which should be regraded as they are dangerous. It has been necessary to lengthen the Aorangi bridge 20 feet, so as to keep the approaches clear of the floods to prevent them washing away. The report also advises that the bridge be painted as soon as the construction is finished, so as to prevent suncracks. Mr Ward, of Ashurst, waited upon the Board, with a request that the Board would cut a ditch about l.> chains in length through his property. Mr Ward further requested that the Board would make a road, or join him in the cost of so doing, as the public are in the habit of continually crossing his land and using it as a public highway. The Board promised to consider these requests. Resolved, That the applications ot Messrs Wnitebead and Gardner to be placed on the rate roll be grunted. Resolved, That Mr 11. Reeve's application for a renewal of his slaughtering licence, be granted. Resolved, That the speci.il order referring to the loan of £1042 for the construction of the Aorangi bridge be confirmed. Resolyed, That notice be sent to owners whose cattle are found trespassing on the roads, in terms of n resolution passed on the sth November last. Proposed by Mr Booth, seconded by Mr Pearce, That tenders be called for the following metalling works — Iviuibolton road, 200 cubic yards ; Makino road, 1000 cubic yards ; Wilsons' road, 600 cubic yards ; Mackay's road, 200 cubic yasds ; Stanway road, 400 cubic yards ; Rangitawa road, 4«0 cubic yards.—Carried. Proposed by Mr Letlibrid^o, seconded by Mr Booth, That tin; action of the Engineer in lengthening the Aorangi bridge 20 feet be approved, and tenders be called for painting the bridge. — Carried. Resolved, That the Engineer write the owners of sections below Forlong's road, requesting them to clear out the Makino creek, so as to prevent the overflow on Forlong's road. Resolved, That the tender of Mr J. H. Ashworth of £25 for the right to collect the dog tax for the current year, be accepted. Proposed by Mr Lethbridge, seconded by Mr Purkiss, That J. Purkiss be authorized to sign cheques for this meeting. After passing the month's accounts, the Board adjourned.
