' ■ ♦ . [fhom ouk own cobbbspondkkt] A picnic was held here on the 20th mat in the school grounds for the scholars. The weather turned oat showery, and rather spoiled the sports. A tea was proyided in the schoolroom' to which about thirty adults sat down, who did ample justice to the good things put before them, The spread reflected great credit on both the taste and the liberality of the ladies who contributed it. The several tables were presided over by Meadames Osborne, McConnell, Duncan, and Nix. In the evening a dance was held in Mr McKenzie's woolshed which was crowded. Dancing and singing was indulged in until the rays of the morning sun lighted up the * the tops of the trees, when the company separated,; all admitting that had spent one of I the pleasantest days o$ their hyes. Mr Ben Poole is having a site cleared for an hotel here, which, I think, we cannot well do without. It will have to come some day, so we may as well have a good man like Mr Poole when we can get him," ,■■••- .• •' . . ■■-, ■>■:•' A store is already established*; and now there is some talk of a butcher starting shortly, so that Apiti will be going ahead. What we want most, howeyer, w to get the roads finished. The loan, intended for that purpose, was lost through the neglect of some of the ratepayers in omit* ting to have their names placed on the rate roll, and others not caring to have to pay ten per cent Engineer's expenses on the work. That ten per cent is a hard bolus for us to swallow. / . ■ • ' : ; ' Some of the selectors on the new Blook haye started felling a small measurement of the forest to enable them to erect dwelling houses on their sections as soon as they can get a burn. Other settlers on this Blook intend to build substantial houses as soon as eyer their bush is burned, and several new settlers have shit ted in lately. ;
