Matters Political
f . « — ; — ■■ ■ I A gentleman who is a keen political • observer, and who recently made an extended tour, covering portions of three North Island provincial districts, informs us that the prospects of the Opposition are decidedly improving, and that the star of the Government is waning in the placeajwhich he visited. In the towns I throughout the colony, too, we hear on reliable authority that the popula ity of the Government is not nearly sotgreat > as it was some time ago. AmongstVper. • sons who haye excellent souroes of information, there is & general' impression that when the House meets again there will be a new Premier— The Hon. E. J. Seddon. The ground for this belief is, ■ of course, the precarious condition of the health of the Hon Mr Ballance, which would tender it very imprudent on his part to risk the severe worry and heavy strain that must devolve on the head of the Government. 'Were the contingency alluded to to arise, it would, of course, seriously alter the political situation ; indeed, the impression that it is very likely to arise is even now considerably influencing the currents of political thought. — Wellington Press.
