Ashurst Notes

♦ It is feared that the large addition being made to the State School buildings, will not be ready for use by the end of the holidays. The sohool looks large enough ! now to assure passers by that they are entering a prosperous district. The chemist and doctor arrived almost simultaneously, and have found plenty of occupation since their advent. The engine, separators, and all such like machinery are now in the colony in readiness for the Ashurst butter factory, the building will not be ready till March. Two parties are at wo rk on the Salisbury Small Farm Association, though late in the season, they are improving the the shining hours yet left and will have a nice little bit of bush down —in readiness for growing grass seed and paddocking horses next felling season. They speak well of the Block as a whole, soil good, bush heavy towards Coal Creek, and well watered throughout. Some of the sections are disfigured by deep ravines where the creeks near their outlets. It was certainly understood here by Mr Bruoe's audience, that he would stand for election again, if his party desired it. He seemed rather disheartened that he could not get the pressing needs of his district attended to by Government in the matter of roads and bridges, although settlement was going on there very rapidly, yet at the same time a very large sum was yoted for a railway that could only benefit a few. It is the opinion here, that the colony can ill afford to spare men of his stamp — patriotic and calm statesmen — and that therefore every effort should be made for his re-election. It would surprise you to see the quantity of wool brought from the Pohangina country to our station There is the committee meeting of the Salisbury Small,,, Farm Association on Saturday, Januarjr 14th, at Ashurst.
