Panama Canal Scandal

GREAT EXCITEMENT IN PARIS. (PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Pakis, December 18. The Senate and Chamber of Deputies have created a public prosecutor with authority to prosecute M. M. Rouvier, Roche, Arene, Pasuest and Gugue de la Fanconnere members of the Chamber, and M. Albert Grevy, Renault, Beral Deves, and Thevent, members of the Senate, owing to the discovery of their initials on the counter foils of cheques aggregating the sum of three millions three hundred thousand francs, alleged to have been distributed by the late Baron Reinach in connection with votes on the Panama Canal Lottery Bill. M. Rouvier, in a violent speech, protested he was perfectly innocent of the charge, and was prepared to have this action scrutinize d by the Court. He declared that while Premier, he levied money on friends for the purpose of increasing the secret service funds, and without this many members now in the chamber would not have secured a seat. M. M. De Konlede and Millevoye assailed M* Clemenceau for i his relations with Heaz. and accused him of selling his journal to a foreigner. Mr Clemenceau called Deroulede a liar. A duel is the outcome of of the quarrel, and the seconds are making arrangements. There is intense excitement in Paris over these scandals.
