Death of Mr Henry Coombe
On Thursday morning shortly after seven o'clock, Mr Henry Cootnbe, started from his residence on the North road, to lead a bull to the farm of Mr Wallis, of Beaconsfleld, who has purchased the animal. The bull was reared by Mr Cootnbe and he had no reason to doubt but that he could undertake the journey in perfect safety. This was a sad mistake because it appears that when near Mr Holden's farm the brute attacked Mr Coombe, and caused his death. Mr Coornbe, who was a native of Devonshire, England, arrived in Auckland about thirty years ago, and then proceeded to Wanganui where he took up a farm at Bonny Glen. On the opening of the Manchester Block Settlement, about seventeen years ago, Mr Coombe purchased land from the Corporation and with his family resided upon it until his unhappy death last Thursday. Mr Coombe although he was of a quiet and unassuming character, and took little or no interest in general or local politics, yet he was much respected by all who knew him. During the natiye troubles he served in the militia for a time, and afterwards in the cavalry corps stationed at Turakina, and bore a high character in both of these arms of the service as a steady and intelligent soldier. He was sixty years of age at the time of his death, and as he was in good health and very vigorous he had every reason to expect to live for many more years to continue his usefulness as a good citizen and an energetic colonist. He leaves behind him a widow, three sons, and four daughters to mourn his loss. The funeral will take place on Sunday (to-morrow) at two o'clock in the afternoon.
