Pohangina Notes

[from our own correspondent.] We had a very heavy hailstorm here on Saturday, the heaviest that was ever known here. Some places felt it more than others. Although it only lasted a few minutes the grouud was as white as if there had been a heavy snowstorm. The hailstones were the size of ordinary playing marbles. The young fruit was knocked about fearfully, and many of the trees injured. The ground was ! covered with plums, apples and goosobernes, and even the crops of vegetables was laid low. The orchards where there was grass standing, which had been saved for seed, after the storm had the appearance of having a large mob of sheep driven through it. It was beaten down so much that I foar it will never rise again this season. The cattle were seen running about like mad things, here there, and everywhere, while the sheep which had been shorn were seen running for the protection of . logs or stumps bleating with pain and terror. The atmosphere was as cold as in mid- winter. A spell of fine weather would be a hoon to the settlers as many of them have started haymaking and want to get it stacked. The school children are looking forward to the breakmg-up-day, and the picnic, with great expectation, and lam glad to say they will not be disappointed. This is a lovely valley for them to find abundant enjoyment. The surplus from last year (£3) and further collections will be spent on the coming occasion in providing amusements. Ail that will be wanted besides is h'ne weather so that all the parents and children on the eastern side of the Pohangina can get to the ground without inconvenience to themselves.
