Midland Road School

TEA AND ENTERTAINMENT. A most successful gathering to celebrate the opening of the above school was held in Mr Goldfinch's Wool Shed yesterday. The shed was tastefully decorated with evergreens, and presented a very attractive appearance. In the afternoon a number of races were run by the children, when prizes were given to the successful ones. The winners amongst the boys were, Masters Fred Allerby, Charles and Robert Boyd, Robert Gray, Johnnie Young, and Herbert Woodman, and the successful girl contestants were Misses Maggie Clark, May Woodman, Hilda Bnnn, Lillie Young, Edith Goldfinch, and Jane Boyd. The married ladies' race over minature hurdles created great amusement, and was finally won by Mrs Young, after a dead heat with Mrs Whittaker. The ladies tug of war also produced much fun, and was a very energetic struggle whilst it lasted. Tea for the young ones was the next thing ; quite 100 children partook thereof, and did it full justice. The grown up folks then sat down, and it became abundantly manifest that babies were in strong force, with highly developed lung powers, and an improniptur "Baby Show" would have proved a great success, and a startling item in the day's events, The Concert in the evening went off well. Messrs Harrison. A. Brown, Smith, and Goldfinch, and the Misses Pleasants and Menzies, and Mrs Bell sang several songs, Mr Andrews gave a reading, and Messrs A. and Joe Brown, contributed recitations. Miss Brown accompanied all the songs in a very pleasing manner. Dancing commenced about 10 p.m. and was kept up well into the small hours, Mr Lucas making a highly efficient M. C. Great praise is due to Messrs Goldfinch, F. and G. Allerby, J. Young, and S. Gray, Members of the Committee, and their wives, as also to Mr A. Brown, and Mesdames J. Donaldson, B. Brown, and D. Bell, for the satisfactory result of their efforts. One and all, are to be congratulated on a most pleasant day's onting.
