He said he op« posed the appointments to the Legislative Council as wrong ia principle, and condemned the increase of payment to members. A vote of thanks and confidence was opposed by an amendment of thanks only. On a show of hands, the chairman could not decide, and the meeting broke up. Wellington. October 28. A three«year old child named Dawson was killed at Petone yesterday, having had its head crushed by the wheel of a fish cart. The wether was fine for the demons tra« tion. The main feature of the morning was the procession which left the Govern* ment buildings at 9.45, headed by a Liliputian pony and chaise, and traversed the main streets. There were five bands, including the Maoris from Otaki, and the usual display of banners and trade trophies. Napieb, October 27. In the Divorce Court to-day the case against Mrs Joshua was closed, some of the witnesses coming out badly under cross examination. The case for the detence was opened. Mrs Joshua's evidence was continued to-day. Briefly she gave a categorical denial to every statement relating to the visits of Kin* nedy, and asserted the impossibility of the alleged improprieties between him and herself.
