Hack Hurdles.— Nat 1, Songster 2, Lady Onslow 8. Mr S. Powell has been appointed starter for the the Canterbury Jockey Club on the same terms as before. Fishwife (by King of the Anglers), who was the first mare mated with Carbine, has foaled a beautiful filly to the great Musket horse. The New Zealand-bred Rob Roy (by Punri) won the Steeplechase* at the Melbourne Hunt Club's meeting, held on the Ist inst. at Flemington. Mr S. H. Gollan had a unique expenence recently at Caulfield. He was exercising one of hip junipers, Kimberley, when the horse: bolted, and notwithstanding Mr Gollan is a big powerful young man, he could not stop his mount until he had covered five miles. The young Trentons are doing well in Australia this season. Lady' Trenton out of Black Swan won the September Hah. dicap at Newcastle on the 22d ulto.^ First Trenton, another scion of the son of Musket— Frailty, got home first in the Park Stakes at the same meeting, and now we learn that Light Artillery, by Trenton has won the Debutant Stakes at Caulfield. Paris was a ' Bad. horse for the ring, being heavily backed * few weeks ago at 10 to 1. Malvolio is a f firm favourite ' , for the Melbourne Cup at 100 to 12, Camoola and Correze being next in popular favour at 100 to 8, both receiving good isupport. For the same event Penance is at 100 to 7, Portsea 100 to 6, and Little Birnie 100 to 3 (taken). For the Derby Camoola is the favourite. : : .• Wanganui, October 17.
