Death of Harry J. Lee
On Sunday morning, at about I o'clock, ' Mr Harry J. Lee died at his residence in Bowen street. He had been ailing for some time from a chest complaint, which i resulted from a severe attack of influenza i about a' year ago. Harry Lee wae one of L the earliest settlers here, and during his residence in Feilding he gained the goodwill of most people by the singular honesty and uprightness of his character. His has been an adventurous career. During his span of life he had followed many occupations. What he was brought up for we do not know, but his parents . were respectable, and gayo him the [ ground work of a good education. He spent some years at sea, and also served t for a time in the Colonial Forces, where he was known as a man of singular I pluck, and it was consequent on exposure when in the field that he lost his ' hearing. At various times he was a | carpenter, carter, coachdnver, shepherd, hairdresser, goldminer, and always industrious. Latterly he settled down to the I occupation of a tailor, at which business he earned a comfortable , livlihopd, be- , sides saving a little money, which he has I generously bequeathed to the Palmerston Hospital. One peculiar feature in his 1 character was that before he proceeded to " have a good time " in his own particular way, he went round to the people f with whom he had business transactions, ' and paid every farthing which he owed. 1 Then he went and enjoyed himself with ' an easy mind. He was open-handed, 1 generous, and in all cases where a help--1 ing hand was needed Harry Lee was only too glad to assist. He had no relations in the colony, and none at Home with whom he had kept up communication. During his last illness kindly hands ministered to him, and he died very peacefully. "After life's fitful fever he sleeps well." The funeral took place at one o'clock this i afternoon, and was attended by a number' of friends. Mr F. Pope was the undertaker. __^^^^^^^^
