Birmingham Notes

[from oub own cobbespondent.] On Saturday evening last the usual meeting of the Kiwitea Literary Society was held, and owing to the rough weather there was a rather small muster of members, amongst whom were only three lady members. Three new members were proposed and elected. Mr Guy gave notice that at the next meeting he should move that all ladies be .admitted free. The subject of ruffianism as displayed at the close of the previous meeting by a young man throwing a bag of flour into the hall was thep introduced. It appeared that the offender had confessed his fault and asked Mr Guy (who3ewife he had knocked down) to forgive him. Mr Guy administered a good lecture to the culprit and agreed to forego any claim for damages, doctor's fees, etc, provided the offender paid a sum : of money to some local charity at once, to which the young man agreed— a very easy get off for him. Thehon. sec, H. Tolley, jr., introduced the subject in the 'negative, " That our Governor's be Elective." The matter was set forth very plainly and so convinced were the audience of the soundness of the speakers 1 views .that Jfchere was no opposition to the . mqtiaq. Im.prQm.ptu, speaking followed, in which Messrs Guy, tettigrew,' Stokes, Moss, Morton, Tolley, senr., took part. It was decided to get up a "Judge and Jury " night. The subject chosen being the trial for breach of promise — " Bardell v Pickwick." — from the animated manner in which the subject was taken np by the members a very good evening's amusement may be expected in about a month's time.
