Birmingham Notes

(from our own correspondent.) The Kiwitea Literarj Society held a meeting; on Saturday evening last at the Town Hall and the proceedings were enlivened by some first-class recitations and singing. The society has now established itself firmly in the township, and the fortnightly meetings are looked forward to with evident increasing interest. It would be a nice change if the meetings could bo so arranged that one ovoning was devoted to the Scotch section, and another to the Irish members. I cannot say much about the Welsh nation, but I ftincy they could giyo a good evening's amusement. It is desired here that in the next batch of J.P.s appointed some gentleman residing in or near Birmingham will be ch'-sen, as the distance of the nearest resident J.P. is a very great inconvenience to parties who require his assistance. I think a word of praise should be given to the teacher of our State school for the great interest she takes in making the schoolroom look pleasant and attractive to the pupils. The walls being decorated with bunches of waving ferns and on the mautleshelf nicely arranged flowers and ferns gives to the room quite a refreshiug appearance. It must also have a tendency to instil into the pupil's minds a love for the graceful and interesting study of natures more lovely gifts, viz., flowers ferns, etc. It is rumoured that we are to have buildings erected for the members of the Church of England aud Roman Catholic Church, so it follows that, as a natural consequence, we shall soon have another hotel in our township. I do not like to trespass out of the district but I hear that both of the would-be hotelkeepers have sold out their interest of their pioposed hotels at Pemberton.
