Volunteer Items
The Manchester Rifles will parade for inspection by Colonel Fox and Lieut. Col. Newall on Thursday the 11th instant. Captains Collins and Loveday, and Lieut.-Commander Duncan were examined on Friday last by the Committee set up by the Legislative Council on Volunteer Privileges. There was a general concensus of opinion amongst these officers that recompense is not awarded to the volunteer for the services he renders, and that .until this is done. a welltrained and disciplined force will not be obtained. Major Sommerville gave his evidence on Saturday. He disapproves tbe adoption of the Kharkee uniform, and suggests with a view to encouraging the Volunteer movement, Volunteers should be allowed at all times to travel on railways at half fares. The Auckland made ammunition used at the last Bide Association meeting he considered was a distinct improvement on that formerly supplied, and its rnanu- ' facture should be encouraged.
