PALMERSTON V. FEILDIM*. What may he termed the match of the season was played on the Oval on Saturday afternoon between the above teams, and proved a very exciting contest. The weather was fine, but the ground was very soft from recent rains, somewhat militating the action of players. There was a good atieudance, including a large number of enthusiasts from Palmerston, aud the ladies were well represented. As soon as the game commeuced it was apparent that the visitors were^far and away the better trained, team and were also heavier than their opponents. . With these advantages it is only a matter of wonder that the visitors' did not win by more than they did, but it was the good individual play of some of the Feilding team that made : the game co equal, as the result was in doubt up to the call of time, although foilmerston had the lead. The magnificent passing of the visitors at times took play almost from oue end of the field to the bttier, and there can be no doubt but that they deserved to win, which places them in the premier position for the season, the first time for some years, Feilding having successfully retained that monopoly until this season. Feilding has been twice, beaten this season and has one drawn with Palmerston. There are yet two matches to be played with Mar ton, one each with Feuding and Palmerston, but these will not effect the championship honors. Duncan kicked off for Palmerston and plaj at once began in earnest, and after a few preliminary skirmishes in neutral territory the visitors made \ decided attack on Feilding's goal line. : Some good passing between McEenzie, Duncan, Jewell, and Speed, saw the latter across the Feilding line, in Joe Eobineon's embrace, within three minutes from the commencement. Duncan took the kick at goal, but no further score resulted. From the kick out Feilding set to work and took play to the visitors quarters, and after a scrum on their goal'hne Palmerston were forced down. From the kick out play was fast and furious, both sides working their level best. Our •« Bob " was all there and within twenty minutes from the commencement was over the visitors 1 line; scoring^ try. Joe Robinson took the kick at goal, bat failed to increase the score. From the kibk ont free kicks and marks were the order of * the day, Feilding eventually being awarded a free kick in the visitors' territory. Joe Robinson was ; entroj>te3 with the kick at goal, but bis attempt was a failure. Play was in the visitors' 25 when half time was called. B. Whisker started the ball in^ the second spell and after a few minutes play Afol£enzie obtained a mark for Palmerstotf, but Duncan's attempt to kick a goal wae a failure. The play was very fast, beiug all over the field, and nowhere long, and every man well knowing that . any slip might lose the match. That inevitable s|ip|did come and right in fronf of Feil&rig's goal, when Mowlem took a pass frofli a Feilding man . and crossed the line. Duncan took the kick at goal, but another . failure was recorded: The .inflated^ was again considerably* knocked aboii^lE^ng carried all over thd field, and j^he^tiine was called the FeUding men^er^tiakrog an attempt to sco^^P^mersibn thus won by four points to two; ' The visitors' backs were superior to those of Feilding, but the forwards were 1 about equal. For Feilding, E. .Whisker; 1 as usual, Smith, Murdtick, J^ Whiskeiy Udy Aitkeo, Dyer, and Straiphefo wer? the pick. Amongst the Palmerston, Robinson, Speed, McKenzie, Johnston, and Duncan showed ; up well,' but ievery man worked hard. Mr Fowlei preformed the onerous duties of referee, arid 1 kept the touch lines dear without, fear of favour. Messrs Randall and Say well (toted as touch line umpires, i-
