(PEB UNITED PBES3 ASSOCIATION). CnRisTCHUfiCH, June 8. An old man named J. E. Hassell. 75 years of age, a carpenter, was killed in Lichfield-street to»day by being thrown out of a cart through the Jiorse bolting. At the inquest this evening a verdict of accidental death was returned. Wellington, June 8. While the Governor's procession was passing through Manners^street a lad named Willie Barnes, aged about 11, was run over by a tram, the wheel of which almost amputated one of thelittle fellow's legs at the thigh. The lad was quickly taken to the Hospital, but died about 5 o'clock. Consequent on the retirement of Mr James Costall from the Government Printing Office, several changes have taken place. Mr James Burns, who joined the office in 1865. succeeds Mr Costall as overseer and Mr John Gamble takes up the position of sub-overseer. The hearing of the alleged conspiracy against the lion. J. B. Whyte, farmer, of Auckland, and Mr G. Baggott, late Re» ceiver of Land Revenue at Welhugton, was resumed to-day, but the case was adjourned till next week after a considerable amount of evidence had been taken. This Day. Mr W. McLean, M.H.R. for Wellington, will move the Address-in-Reply in the Lower House, and Mr Sandford, member for Christshurch, will probably second it. Dunedin, This Day. Arthur McDonald and Co., gram merchants, have been declared bankrupt at the instance of their English creditors. It is stated the colonial creditors are protected, nearly all the liabilities being to their English houses.
