Feilding Borough Council

The monthly meeting, of the above council was held in the Council Chambers on Thursday night. Present— The slayor (presiding), Crs Chamberlain, Sanrlilands, Goodbehere, Uarthew, Watts, Gould, J. 0. Thompson. The minutes of the last ordinary and a special meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. From James Purkiss, intimating that the Halcombe Town Board would assist in procuring the suggested alterations in the railway time table. From Wanganui Borough Council to. the same effect. From E. Goodbehere, Secretary of the Kiwitea Boad Board, promising co-opera-tion in securing the proposed improved train service. From Henry Outran and AVC: Hay- ' cock, re change of name on burgess roll. The Clerk of Works reported on tho progress of contracts now being executed in the borough, and pointed. out the neecesity of having the Kiwitea bridge repaired. The Public Works committee reported on the application made by Mr Chamberlain for a culvert in front of his mill, and they estimated the cost would be about £16 exclusive of the work promised by Mr Chamberlain ; also the erection of lamps at yanous centres m the town. The Finance committee recommended for payment of accounts ; the sum of £128 2s4d. A report was presented by the committee formed to report on the cemetery, who recommended the laying out of footpaths, and other improvements, also the erection of vaults, and charges for their use. From the Municipal Association of N.Z., intimating the date of the next meeting (loth July), and inviting a list of debateable subjects for the occasion. From J. H. Blackmore, pointing out the difficulties met with in the execution of his duties as poundkeeper, owing to his assistant being interfered with by the publio iv carrying out bis work. From D. and W. Manson, calling attention to the state of the drain in Kimbolton road fronting The Pines their property. From !£.■:•; Hasfcie, requesting that the footpath m front of her hotel be made passable for foot passengers; - From. W. Rutherford, secretary of the P. N. Hospital and 0. A. Board, re disbursements of Charitable Aid/ GENERAL. Proposed by Cr Goodbehere. seconded by Cr Carthew, . That the report of the Finance Committee be adopted.— Car- 1 ried. Proposed by Or J. 0. Thompson, sec onded by Cr Gould, That the report of the Public Works Committee 6e adopted. The erection of the lamps and culyert, recommended caused some' discussion, Crs Sandilands and Goodbehere opposed the carrying out of these suggestions on j the ground of needless expenditure of public money. Crs Watts and Gould spoke in defence of the suggestions made by the committee, and pointed out the urgent necessity for the erection of a lamp at the junction of Grey and Denbigh street. One or two amendments were proposed and rejected.. Eventually the following resolution proposed by Cr Haybittle, seconded by Cr Lethbndge, That that portion only of the report of the Public Works Committee dealing with the culyert near Chamberlaiu's mill be adopted, —Carried. Crs Sandilands. Gould, and J. C. Thompson opposed the proposition. Proposed by Cr Goodbehere, seconded by Cr Lethbridge, That the name of A. 0. Haycock be placed on the Burgess roll.in place of Henry Curran, and J. D. Valentine in place of Wm Russell.— Cari ried. • Proposed by Cr Goodbehere, seconded by Cr Lethbridge, That the request of M. Hastie to have a few loads of gravel placed on Kirn bolton road in front of the Feilding Hotel be granted.— Carried. Proposed by Cr J. 0. Thompson, sec. onded by Or Chamberlain, That the suggestions of the cemetery committee re fees for the erection of vaults, tomb stones and fences be carried into effect, and the report be adopted.— Carried. In reference to the application of Mr J. H. Blackmore, Cr Sandilands opposed the application, and would move that it. be ordered to lie on the table. : ' Cr Lethbridge proposed that the appli- | cation be received, and that the Clerk i write to Mr Blackmore informing him that his deputy had the same powers whilst acting as such,, as were conferred on the poundkeeper himself. Seconded by Cr Carthew and it was carried. Proposed by Cr Lethbridge, seconded by Or Goodbehere, That this Council agree to distribute charitable aid as requested by the Palmerston North Charitable Aid and Hospital Board.— Carried. In reply to a question by Or ;Goodba-' here the Mayor stated the' amoUnt of overdraft at the present time was £347. Cr Sandilands moyed that the Mayor or some member whom •he may appoint be appointed delegate to attend the forthcoming meeting of the Municipal Association. Ho thought much useful information could be gained by one of their members attending that conference, especially in reference 1 to the borough bye* laws. A notice of motion concerning which was to proposed at that meeting.— Carried. Conceding to a request, the Council agreed that the '"Calliope Yatiety Coiripany " who are to appear in. the Assembly Rooms on Monday next in aid of the new hospital, receive the patronage of the Council. . Thompson, seconded by Cr Haybittle, That the Council hereby express its deep sympathy with Mrs Hacarthur on the lamented death of her late husband, the first Mayor of' this Borough, and that the Mayor write a letter of condolence to Mrs Maoarthur, and enclose a copy of this resolution.—Carried. A notice of motion was proposed by Cr Gould, seconded by Cr J. C. Thompson, That the whole of the Borough bye-laws be reyised and that a committee consisting of the following :— The Mayor,. Crs Sandilands, Goddbehere, J. C Thompson and the moyer be appointed to revise the same, and report at the next meeting of the Council.— Carried. The Council then adjourned.
