•> (PEE UNITED PBES3 ASSOCIATION). Auckland, May 17. A well known recipient of charitable aid, Sir Charles Burdett, Barf, who for the past two years has been aa inmate of the Costley Home for the Aged Poor, died at that institution last night. Deceased was the seventh baronet of Benthwaite. He was formerly a lieutenant in the 54th Foot, and afterwards in the Second Staffordshire Militia, About 30 years ago he came to New Zealand, and fought in the Waikato War. Wellington, This Day, At the fuaeral of the Hon J. Martin this morning, the Premier, and Mr B. Seddon were present. Tho Polhill Gully Commission report was submitted to the Government to-day. The Commissioners think it would been preferable for the Government itself to have taken land under the Public Works Act, aud they also think there waa no apparent reasons why the sum paid for land should not have been placed on the Sup plementary Estimates. No agents appear any time to be employed on behalf of tho Government to effect the purchase. J The average price of the land bought by Kirk and Atkinson was £36 9s Id per acre and as it was sold by them to Government at £81 per acre.
