The Liberal Party in the London County Council have asked Lord llosebery to consent to be nominated for the chairmanship. At a dinner in connection with the annual meeting of the Chamber of Commerce, Sir M. Hicks Beach urged the colonies should be allowed free markets in Great Britain, but he said England would refuse to grant preference to colonial products unless the colonies reciprocated the concession. This statement was received with loud cheers. Sir E. C. N. Braddon, Agent- General for Tasmania, concurred in this sentiment, and complained that at present England coolly regarded Australia, whose only fault was attempting too much to benefit the inhabitants and promote the prosperity of the country. Mrs Gordon Baillie has been released from prison. St. James Gazette states that the Tory leaders intend to introduce fresh legislation with reference to the Labor questions, beginning with a strongly amended Employers' Liability Bill, and to drop the Irish Local Government Bill. The Bill giving religious bodies power to purchase the freehold of their places of worship was read a second time in the House of Commons by a majority oi 119. The Government were in the minority on the question, the division being bungled by the leaders of the party. The highest price realised for the shipment of Cape grapes was 91b per Ib. Pears brought excellent prices. The fruit was landed in fine condition, and was not at all damaged during the voyage. At the annual meeting of the Chamber of Commerce a resolution was passed urging the extention of the postal orders system to the colonies. March 10. The arbitrator has awarded Tim Healy i'7oo against Freeman's Journal. The falls of snow have been so great as to interrupt traffic in England. Washington, March 9. The United States Government look upon the demands of the British Government, with regard to the Behnng Sea difficulty, as excessive. March 10. A great blizzard has swept over Michigan to Montana. Owing to cars being derailed, fifty persons were badly frozen. Calcutta, March 10. The rebels attacked the British troops in Assam, but were repulsed in eight engagements with heavy loss. The British loss was ten Sepojs killed, and a number wounded. Berlin, March 10. Eussia is massing troops on the German frontier. Pabis, Marcli 10. Deacon, the American, who shot the French Attache whom he found in his wife's bedroom at Nice, has been released on bail. Madrid, March 10. trial of a further batch of the Xerea Anarchists has began at Cadiz. A riotous mob surrounded the Courthouse and created a disturbance during the hearing of the charge. New York, Marcli 10. Thirty Negroes have been arrested at Memphis on a charge of murdering four Marshals. Three of the band were subsequently lynched by the mob.
